Platinum group metals support medicine as active ingredients, specialist materials and catalysts. Platinum’s biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity and radiopacity make it suitable for components in pacemakers, catheters, stents, neuromodulation devices and implantable defibrillators.

Platinum compounds are active ingredients in established cancer medicines, including cisplatin, carboplatin and oxaliplatin. PGMs also catalyse precise chemical reactions used to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients.

In these applications, PGMs perform different functions. They may remain in the final device or medicine, or enable a manufacturing reaction without being consumed.
